We have a private, covered patio outside our master bedroom in our new house. It’s amazing – except for the fact that the neighbors’ fence is only 10 feet away, the fence is only 4′ tall, and they have barking dogs.
What to do?
I’m training our dog to ignore the other dogs, but the neighbor dogs get excited with any movement or noises from our side of the fence. My immediate thought was a living wall (for our own privacy) at the end of our patio. It gets morning sun, so perfect for strawberries. Since strawberries are especially attractive to almost all pests (including snails, slugs and gophers) that would keep them safe from pest consumption, so us humans can consume them all.
Great idea, but what if we make the wall a little more substantial to deaden sound for us AND the dogs? Brilliant!
So, after a bit of research, we decided on a cinderblock wall. Arrange some at 90 degrees and fill with dirt and berries.
THEN – we got the AMAZING idea to add a fountain on the wall as well. Soothing for us, confusing (hopefully) for the dogs, and the magical world of silence, world peace (at least neighborly peace) will descend upon us and we’ll live happily ever after.
Now that I’ve settled on a concrete block living strawberry wall with a water feature, I’m chomping to get started. Even though we have a ton of priorities ahead of it.
At least I know that there IS a solution. Maybe this one will help you with your particular noise problem as well.
Nothing can’t be solved with landscaping.
