I hate to use chemicals anywhere in my yard. We have chickens, a dog and a cat. Not to mention edible landscaping. So when I have weeds to get rid of, I use plain white vinegar. It’s cheap, and mixed with salt (epsom salt is the cheapest) plus dish detergent to make it stick (any kind) it makes an effective spray that kills weeds pretty quickly. Be careful, because it will kill the plants you like, too, if they get sprayed. I generally use this on stone walkways and sidewalks where the weeds come up in between.
- 1 gallon distilled white vinegar
- 2 cups salt
- 1/4 cup dish soap
OR in a large spray bottle:
- 1/4 cup salt
- 1 squirt dish soap
- fill the rest with vinegar
You don’t have to be precise, but those are the general proportions.
Spray in the morning on a hot, dry day and your weeds should be brown by the evening.
And besides being non-lethal to our pets, this is so much cheaper than the chemical route. You’ll have more money to spend on plants you like and that’s WAY better than spending it on plants you don’t like.
Enjoy your killing spree – I know I always do. It’s very satisfying to remove the invaders.
